Bouclé is Back! But, What is It?

If you've been browsing furniture recently, you might have seen the term Bouclein in some of the descriptions of products What exactly is it? It's not a mouthwatering French dessert that is new (unfortunately) but rather a timeless fabric that was popularized in the 1940s.

The Gioia Modular Chair

The word "boucle" comes from French that means "to curl" this textured looped fabric was popularized during the 1940s by architect Florence Knoll and designer Eero Saarinen after they launched the "Womb Chair." The addition to boucle to the mainstream brought this fabric to prominence with a range of mid century modern furniture designers and fashionable fashion designers like Coco Chanel through the 1950s.

In the past, boucle is made of wool, but nowadays boucle fabrics are composed of different fabrics, including silk, linen, cotton and polyester.

So What are the Pros and Cons of Boucle?

Pros:

Texture! The raised loops produce an unique, irregular texture that enhances the appearance of pillows, furniture or throws, without the need for patterns.

DurabilityThe fabric is generally extremely durable due to the way it is constructed which involves 3 yarns that are wrapped around one another to produce the intriguing texture. Furthermore it is impervious to wear and stain, so with normal care it will look great for a long time even in the lighter shades!

Cons:

Texture It's true. I've said that this is good However, some users may feel that this fabric is slightly rough on the skin, or stiff, particularly if it is composed of wool. Additionally, the tiny loops could be somewhat of a problem for pet owners since the loops are small and are prone to catching pet hair.

Cleaning The fabric is stain resistant and stain-proof, therefore, should your boucle fabric gets stained it may become difficult to wash but it's not all that is needed! Steam cleaning is usually the trick to get the tougher stains off.
